About Institution Of Engineers(India) :

PREAMBLE :

The Institution of Engineers (India) - IEI is the first professional body of engineers founded in India to be incorporated by Royal Charter to promote and advance the art, science and practice of the myriad fields of engineering and technology. From a humble beginning in 1920, it is today a multi - disciplinary nation wide organisation having an overall membership over 0.4 million; the largest body of its kind in the whole of Asia with international status and bilateral relations with many sister societies round the world.

IEI functions with and amongst the professional engineers, academicians and research workers and provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the government, the industries, the academic and the engineering community.

IEI is the pioneer body to introduce non formal engineering education programme, successful completion of which is recognised as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, State Governments and Public/ Private sector organisations.

INCEPTION OF IEI :

In a meeting at Calcutta on 3rd January 1919, it was decided to form a Society for the advancement of all branches of engineering sciences in India and thus 'The Indian Society of Engineers' was born. Soon thereafter at a meeting held in Shimla on July 16, 1919; the code of rules was amended and the name of the Society was changed to 'The Institution of Engineers (India)'. It was registered under the Indian Companies Act 1913 at Madras on 13th September 1920.

The formal inauguration ceremony was held on February 23, 1921; at Calcutta in the august presence of His Excellency Lord Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India. The Royal Charter was granted to the Institution on September 9, 1935; by His Majesty George V, the King and the Emperor.

Organisation :

IEI with its Headquarters in Calcutta is administered by a National Council with the President as its head and operates through 91 state and local Centres located at capital cities and towns of industrial and academic importance all over the country. The Secretary and Director General is the Chief executive of the Institution.

IEI has 43 buildings of its own in various parts of the country used by the Centres. IEI has nearly 70,000 corporate and nearly 2,80,000 non corporate members and nearly 1,60,000 examinees.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is the premier engineering professional society of India and represents over 0.4 million engineers from within the country and abroad. In order to cope with the rapidly changing technological scene, IEI has established 15 Engineering Divisions for the advancement of respective discipline of engineering.
